Role Model “The Science Machine” Michael Green Rocks the Show
–
When you go to a concert you always know there will be an opening act. The same holds true for a comedy show. These people get up on stage to get you warmed up for the main attraction which is set to outdo any opening act you can come up with. In the case of the 2016 S.T.E.M. Saturday put on by Fulton County Schools in Georgia, the main act sure did get a big boost of competition from the opening act known as Michael Green the Science Machine.
Filled with boys and girls from middle school through high school and parents dotting every corner, Michael Green rocked the house. Who knew science could be so much fun?? With everything from trying to burn a balloon that wouldn’t burn because it was filled with water to turning liquids into solids you couldn’t pour out a cup, Michael Green made it happen. He made science exciting and this is the crux behind programs like S.T.E.M. Saturday geared at showing kids that careers in science, technology, engineering and math don’t have to be boring. These careers are notorious for bringing in lots of money; however, no one speaks to the personal sense of fulfillment people in these careers have when they can live a comfortable life and change the world with their work.
As a Morehouse College alumni, Michael Green is an advocate for making science both informative an fun. In his capacity as President and CEO of Science for Everyone, Inc., he took what many would think is the socially awkward, pocket protector wearing stereotype and turned it upside down. Truthfully though, what’s wrong with a pocket protector anyway!??!! I say nothing is wrong with it; but, to get kids interested in science, technology, engineering or math can sometimes be a fate not a tempted by even the strong warrior yet Michael made it look so easy.
Once Michael supercharged the kids, they were ready for an action packed day at the conference that included things like film making, video game and app building, computer science and so much more. Bob Mackey from The Power of the Knot and The Power of the Purse even came by to put in his show stopping performance as well in on communication skills while he helped the parents find their inner kid again.
With that said, I take my hat off to the folks at Fulton County Schools, Atlanta Cares Mentoring and all of the other wonderful people there who showed our boys and girls how great their future can look.
